Spring is the time of year when many of us finally pull the cover off, look at the engine, and wonder what we missed over the winter. If you keep your boat in Wilmington or anywhere along the Southern California coast, the spring commissioning process doesn’t have to be stressful. Here’s a friendly walkthrough of what we recommend checking before you splash your boat.

Before you turn the key, take a good look around the engine. Check for rodent damage to wiring and hoses, since mice love to nest in a quiet boat over winter. Look for fuel leaks, oil residue, and cracked belts. If the battery was stored, make sure it’s charged and the terminals are clean.

          Fluids, Filters,

          and Impellers

Fresh engine oil and a new oil filter are often the simplest way to start the season right. Next, check the fuel filter for water or debris, and inspect the raw water impeller. A worn impeller is one of the most common reasons an engine overheats, and it’s inexpensive to replace compared to the damage it can cause. Don’t forget the drive lubricant on sterndrives and outdrives, which should look clean, not milky.

          Cooling System

          and Anodes

Once the engine is running, watch the temperature gauge and make sure water is flowing out of the exhaust. Saltwater and brackish water can corrode metal quickly, so inspect the sacrificial anodes and replace any that are heavily eroded. Healthy anodes protect your drive and running gear from electrolysis.

Spring is a great time to test navigation lights, the horn, bilge pumps, and any electronic controls that were quiet over the winter. If your engine uses digital throttle or shift systems, look for warning lights on startup. A quick check now can save you from a dead radio or a stalled motor when you’re halfway out of the harbor.

Plenty of spring checks are easy to handle yourself, but some jobs call for a trained technician. If you notice persistent overheating, rough idle, hard starting, or unusual vibration, it’s worth having a mechanic take a look before you head out. Catching these problems early is far cheaper than a tow.
